Dust Storm

Continuing on with the photography theme, I can’t help but post more work by photojournalist Steve McCurry. This one is entitled “Dust Storm” and was taken in 1983 in Rajasthan, India. The intensity and vibrancy of the colours are so distinctive of the country. Visually, India must be one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and I think this picture is a very good example of that.

Afghan Girl

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — ArtistConnected @ 1:46 pm

This portrait of a young Afghan girl by Steve McCurry has always had a hold over me. The power and intensity of the young girl’s gaze makes this one of the most captivating human images around.

With a career that began covering the Soviet War in Afghanistan, and that would eventually span conflict zones throughout the world; the Iran-Iraq War, Beirut, Cambodia and the Philippines, Steve McCurry has produced some of the most striking portraits of modern times.

Cool Hunting presents São Paulo Fashion Week

Cool Hunting’s “video of the week” is all about one thing…”the ass”. And to be more specific, bikinis at the São Paulo Fashion Week 2009. This is a very sexy montage of models, fashion and style; as well as some amusing and interesting comments by Brazilian designers expressing their opinions on the “Brazilian bum”. A colourful display of sight and sound that is sure to arouse the senses!

Red Stripe

It’s Notting Hill Carnival time and therefore time for a Red Stripe! I love these ads. There a bit twisted, I’ll admit, but very funny all the same. This one would have to be one of my favourites. Take a look!

Gain Laundry Detergent

Having listened to this a couple of times I’m not exactly sure how I feel. Furthermore, I have no idea whether I’ve just enjoyed listening to it or whether I’ve just lost a minute of my life. Someone, however, believes it’s great! Otherwise it wouldn’t have won bronze in the Radio Lions category for the 2009 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, media’s equivalent of the Oscars. Click on the photo to listen and decide for yourself :)

The Inbetweeners

There isn’t much on television that makes me laugh as much as the boys from the Inbetweeners. Call it what you will; childish, toilet humor, immature, it’s just so bloody funny!! The Frisbee sketch, although one of the tamer ones, is a classic and just cracks me up. If you haven’t seen it then click on the image below. Pure genius!

Inglorious Basterds

“Once upon a time in Nazi-occupied France…”
Looking for a straight shooting, factually correct and politically sensitive, historically correct war film? Well this ain’t it!

A rip roaring, action-packed ride of adventure, vengeance and rampage, Inglorious Basterds is WWII through the eyes of Quentin Tarantino.

Led by Lieutenant Aldo “the Apache” (played by the one and only Brad Pitt) a Jewish, Nazi-scalping hit squad bent on murder, destruction and above all revenge, sows terror through the Nazi ranks of German-occupied France. If you were expecting Saving Private Ryan you’re in for a surprise!!

Facing East

This track is a great example of Thievery Corporation’s eclectic musical style. Based in Washington, D.C, the recording artist and DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have forged a reputation for producing some of the funkiest and coolest alternative music around. With a wide range of influences, their musical styles incorporate dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian, Middle Eastern and the silky smoothness of Brazil’s bosa nova. Facing East, from the album The Richest Man in Babylon, is definitely up there as one of my favourites; exotic, seductive and downright sexy. Have a listen!

Bayer: Woman

This is part of an outdoor advertising campaign for Bayer Aspirin by the Sao Paulo based agency ALMAPBBDO. The add won Gold for the month of June in the Ads of the World monthly “Outdoor” awards. I’ve got to say it’s as fresh as they come, loaded with colour and energy, and a sexy Indian Goddess theme to boot. With all the monotonous and dull adverts that are flooding the media today it’s a breath of fresh air when someone comes up with something original and different.

Emily Pilloton’s new book showcases 100 of the world’s most ingenious design creations that will improve the quality of life in both developed and undeveloped nations. Pushing the point that the way forward is to create tools that will help to change the world, the former Inhabitat editor and founder of Project H, a socially-conscious design firm, challengers designers to think of themselves as design activists and not just creators of “stuff”. Creations range from all-terrain wheelchairs to more efficient water transport systems. It’s a very interesting book that provides some much needed optimism for the future.
