Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

Filed under: Uncategorized — ArtistConnected @ 2:28 pm

desiderataofhappiness

In Latin it means “desired things”, but for Max Ehrmann it was about leaving behind a “humble gift”, something that would touch the soul. A poet and lawyer from Terre Haute, Indiana, Ehrmann first obtained a copyright for Desiderata in 1927. Popular belief claims he wrote it the same year, though there are no facts to prove this.

Desiderata is a touching and moving piece of prose that makes one think about life and the world we live in. You might just find it gives you a breath of fresh air on a busy day.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

“…The Autumn/Winter (launching in October) collection is currently being seen in London by every respected fashion buyer in the industry and will be available to buy from reputable outlets, as well as on the Pretty Green website (keep a look out for the confirmed retail list on the site in a few weeks) . The reaction to the collection has been incredible and people are already touting Pretty Green as the next big thing in menswear.

As well as the top industry people, we invited some of our community customer’s along last week to have a look and see what’s coming this October.

Every single person who attended was blown away by what’s to come this season from Pretty Green.

We wanted to share some of their thoughts and comments with you…

“It was a brilliant day and I left buzzing to get my hands on the majority of the new range! I haven’t been able to stop talking about the new range, whilst making people aware that pretty green is about to shake up the marketplace in a big way! I left knowing that pretty green is creating clothes specifically for people like me. People with similar interests and the same desires about what their clothes should say about the people who wear them and the envy they put into the people who are not wearing them” (Ben D)

“I love my clothes and from what I saw today i have no doubt that from now on all I will buy is Pretty Green. Thank-you Dean and all at Pretty Green, as Liam would say you are all BIBLICAL!” (Jaswant)

“I thought everything in the new range was fantastic, I loved the t shirts, jumpers, jeans in fact it was just all brilliant and as for the leather jacket that was just amazing it’s top of my wish list, got me fingers crossed for that lottery win! However I’m currently throwing most me clothes out to get some space in the wardrobe for an October shopping spree! … Anyway keep up the good work, Pretty Green is shaping up to be the best brand out there!” (Ben P)…”

“Tha real Rye Rye”

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: , , — ArtistConnected @ 12:50 pm

Young, innocent and full of energy. Well, maybe not that innocent. But the young Rye Rye certainly knows how to entertain. The 18 year old singer, rapper and song writer from Baltimore is currently finishing her first album, describing her style as “unique and hard hitting”. Rye Rye has already toured with M.I.A and appeared on a remix of their track Paper Planes, the well known single from the film Slumdog Millionaire.

This video comes courtesy of coolhunting and features the young Rye Rye talking about how she started out and where she gets her inspiration from.

Viva la Vida!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: , , , — ArtistConnected @ 3:29 pm

I love this song. It’s as simple as that. When I’m feeling down, flat, miserable or just out of sorts, I can’t think of a better song to raise my spirits. I found this video while poking around on youtube this morning, as you do, and it’s a lovely change to the official Viva la Vida video clip. Set to a series of five paintings by the artist Thomas Cole, it is entitled ‘The Course of Empire’. Coldplay’s lyrics combined with these stirring images make for a reel kick start to the day. Take a look!

Dust Storm

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: , — ArtistConnected @ 1:19 pm

Continuing on with the photography theme, I can’t help but post more work by photojournalist Steve McCurry. This one is entitled “Dust Storm” and was taken in 1983 in Rajasthan, India. The intensity and vibrancy of the colours are so distinctive of the country. Visually, India must be one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and I think this picture is a very good example of that.

Afghan Girl

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — ArtistConnected @ 1:46 pm

This portrait of a young Afghan girl by Steve McCurry has always had a hold over me. The power and intensity of the young girl’s gaze makes this one of the most captivating human images around.

With a career that began covering the Soviet War in Afghanistan, and that would eventually span conflict zones throughout the world; the Iran-Iraq War, Beirut, Cambodia and the Philippines, Steve McCurry has produced some of the most striking portraits of modern times.

Cool Hunting’s “video of the week” is all about one thing…”the ass”. And to be more specific, bikinis at the São Paulo Fashion Week 2009. This is a very sexy montage of models, fashion and style; as well as some amusing and interesting comments by Brazilian designers expressing their opinions on the “Brazilian bum”. A colourful display of sight and sound that is sure to arouse the senses!

It’s Notting Hill Carnival time and therefore time for a Red Stripe! I love these ads. There a bit twisted, I’ll admit, but very funny all the same. This one would have to be one of my favourites. Take a look!
